The Library and Archives Canada Foundation is proud to announce that its financial support has enabled Library and Archives Canada (LAC) to acquire an unpublished journal written by John Norton (Teyoninhokarawen) as well as accompanying letters. The material documents his time in the United Kingdom in 1804–1805 as a diplomatic envoy representing the Six Nations.
These documents are an important addition to LAC’s pre-Confederation fonds and collections. Furthermore, they are an extremely rare occurrence of textual archives from a member of the Haudenosaunee community from the early 19th century.
The journal and letters have been digitized and are accessible through LAC.
Ensuring such historical material becomes part of Canada’s cultural heritage and is made available to present and future generations is an essential part of our mandate.
We wish to thank the donors whose generosity has made this acquisition possible.
